Rustic Furniture

Rustic furniture traces its origin from the year 1870 and it became popular in New York during the same time. The characteristics of the furniture are deep seats, curved backs and wide armrests. Such furniture became tourist magnets. The furniture is usually made from cedar, which is imported, in its natural color, which is light gold. Such furniture can be used indoors as well as outdoors. It has been noticed, that over the time, their colors may change to silvery gray, but this change of color can be delayed using water based or oil stains. The smell of fresh cedar is like a mild insect repellent, which makes these products resistant to damages caused by insects. The cedar wood use for the purpose is supposed to have small diameters. It is the best choice for rustic furniture for it absorbs and loses moisture slowly, thereby minimizing dry cracking, splintering and swelling. On the other hand, dry cracking, splintering and swelling is commonly associated with oak and pine. When cedar logs are dried, the wood reduces in length and width and tension is created in the wood. Consequently, the wood splits to relieve the tension so created. The splitting is lengthwise and these cracks are called "checks".
These checks are natural and can be found in all cedar log furniture - creating much of its character.
Some examples of rustic dining room furniture are the ash wood 5 piece round dining table group, the casual crates dining room, the san Marco wood post and the Albany 5 piece round table group.
